Best known for its premium revolvers and pistols for LE and personal defense, Smith & Wesson’s new Model 1854 Walnut lever-action is a multi-purpose carbine that bridges classic American rifle design with modern day performance
by the Shoot ON Staff
Lever-action rifles have enjoyed a huge surge in popularity in recent years as discerning hunters, sport shooters, and personal defense advocates are rediscovering the advantages and the fun of this iconic American design. Now, Smith & Wesson, a manufacturer with its own deep heritage and unrivaled reputation in the handgun segment, has put its design and manufacturing prowess to work in the lever-action carbine arena with the introduction of the S&W Model 1854 Walnut pistol-caliber carbine.
Aesthetically, the Model 1854 holds to the classical lever-action design with its rich walnut furniture and corrosion-resistant black Armornite® finish. While the Model 1854 retains the core DNA of lever guns past, from the muzzle to the butt pad, this carbine is purpose-driven for the modern shooter.
Chambered for the powerful .44 Magnum cartridge, the Model 1854 offers side gate or magazine tube loading with a side ejection port. The ultra-smooth action comes courtesy of a loop-style lever that makes for rapid cycling and glove-friendly performance. Generous checkering along the grip and forearm deliver a solid purchase in the field or on the range.
In a nod to the growing number of shooters returning to the art of open sight marksmanship, Smith & Wesson includes the XS Sights ghost ring rear sight system and gold bead front post for no-fail operation. The rear sight mounts via a Picatinny rail, allowing for the inclusion of a red dot optic for those who favor a more modern twist.
Speaking of modern accommodations, the Model 1854 comes with an 11/16-24 threaded 19.25-inch barrel, making for simple installation of a muzzle brake or suppressor. Further keeping with the “modernized classic” theme, the rifle includes a contemporary-style flat-faced trigger to promote consistent finger placement and to enhance accuracy potential.
With its plush rubber butt pad, crossbolt safety, flat hammer spur, and smooth cycling, the Model 1854 delivers the kind of positive operational control and comfortable shooting experience that today’s shooters demand.
