The Hunt-Tec 4×32…all of what you need, none of what you don’t

by the Shoot On staff

We’re like you. We love to drool over extravagant optics, dreaming of the ones that “someday” will grace our hunting rifles. In the interim, necessity often demands a price-conscious outlook and a reality check in what is practical versus what we think we need.

In the whitetail woods, there is one truth that not many hunters realize or accept — a 4X optic is the best choice. Call it the Goldilocks solution.

Consider the typical whitetail hunt. For most of the country, that means sitting in a woodland environment where practical shooting distances are under 100 yards…and most likely 50 yards or less. For this, a 4X scope is just right; enough magnification to wend your bullet through holes in the brush or around tree limbs, not so much that you can’t find your target quickly.

Sometimes, the rifle platform dictates the optic. With more hunters picking up straightwall rifle and pistol-caliber cartridges for deer and hog hunting (.350 Legend, .450 Bushmaster, .44 Magnum, and a few more in that crowd), the need for a scope that can put you on a deer tick at 250 yards is simply overkill. Money better spent on good ammo.

We occasionally like to kick around with oddball rifles for our deer hunting adventures. Something different…like our home-built AKM. A 1 MOA rifle it certainly isn’t, but it’s darn fun to hunt with and plenty accurate for our typical whitetail hunts. All that to say, it will never be graced with a scope costing north of $100. What we have graced it with is TRUGLO’s Hunt-Tec Compact 4×32. With a $47.99 MSRP (street price is even less), this is a scope that fits our hunting scenarios as well as our firearm platform. If we crash on the hillside, the AKM will be fine. Should the scope not make it, we can replace it for the cost of a good meal.

It’s something to consider if you find yourself fighting the “what I want” versus “what I need” battle in your mind.
